Asking for a hug without a reason

Asking · 2 min ·

There is a particular kind of stuck where you would like somebody to be kind to you, and the reason you do not ask is that you cannot think how to justify it.

Nothing has happened. Nobody died. You are not in crisis. You just would rather somebody said something warm to you today, and that does not feel like enough of a case to make.

There is no case to make

When you ask for a hug here, there is no field asking what is wrong. Not an optional one. There is no place to put it, because the box would do the harm on its own.

A box that asks why turns asking into an application. And an application has a bar, even when nobody set one, because the person filling it in will invent a bar and then decide they are under it.

Make somebody justify themselves and the people who most need it will quietly leave.

The not-bad-enough problem

This is the most common reason people give for not using a site like this, and it is worth naming directly. The thought goes: other people have real problems, and mine is only that today was long and the flat is quiet. Somebody who needs this more should have the slot.

There is no slot. Nobody is being kept waiting because you asked. A person who feels like giving a hug today has one to give, and giving it to you does not take it away from anybody.

You can say as much or as little as you like

You can ask and write nothing at all. Plenty of people do. If you would like to say something, these are all complete and ordinary things to send:

  • Long week. That is all.
  • Not for a reason. Just would like one.
  • Bit low today and cannot say why.
  • Good news actually, and nobody to tell.

That last one matters. Asking here is not only for bad days. If this were a site for people having a hard time, then arriving would be an admission, and the admission is the barrier. People turn up in a good mood too, and that is what keeps anybody from being labelled by being here.

What happens next

Somebody who felt like being kind today sees that a person has asked, and writes you a few sentences. They do not know who you are. They see the name the site gave you and nothing else.

You are not obliged to reply, to be grateful in a particular way, or to explain afterwards whether it helped. You can read it and close the tab.

One honest limit: this is not a helpline and nobody here is a professional anything. If today is heavier than a stranger's kind words can carry, there are people who can help properly, and the site keeps that list one click away. Asking there is not a failure either.
