When nobody answers
Asking · 3 min ·
You asked for a hug and nothing has come back. It has been an hour, or an afternoon, and the page still says the same thing it said when you posted it.
This is the post about that, because a site that only describes the good version of itself is not being straight with you.
What actually happens to an ask
It goes up on one page. It is not announced anywhere, it does not go out to the membership, and nobody is notified that a person is having a hard day.
Whoever comes along next wanting to give a hug is shown one ask at a time, longest wait first. Not a scrollable list of other people's bad days, which would be a browsing experience, and not a popularity contest either. Longest wait first is there precisely so that nobody sits at the bottom for ever while the same few asks collect everything.
If you wrote something with your ask, it takes a moment to be read over before it goes up. Usually seconds. An ask with nothing written in it has nothing to read, so it goes at once.
Why a quiet day is a real thing
This place opens gently, a few people at a time, on purpose, so that somebody who asks actually gets something. The cost of that is obvious and we would rather name it than dress it up: on a small site, at three in the morning in your part of the world, the number of people awake and in a giving mood is small.
An empty room is worse than no room at all. The alternative to a quiet hour would be manufacturing warmth to fill it, and a site that sends you an automatic kindness is a site that has taught you its kindness means nothing.
Honest absence, over false presence.
What the wait is not
The reading that tends to arrive first is that somebody saw it and decided against. That reading is available, it is the one the mind reaches for, and it is almost always wrong. Nobody has passed over you, because nobody has seen you passed over.
There is no queue position, no rejection, and no record anywhere of an ask having waited. If it helps to know: the people giving hugs are not choosing between you and somebody more deserving. They are shown one ask, and it is whichever has waited longest.
What you can do meanwhile
- Leave it up. Asks do not expire, and the longer yours has waited the sooner it is shown.
- Take it down whenever you like. It is one tap and nobody is told.
- There is only ever one of yours up at a time, which is deliberate: several at once would split the hugs coming back.
- Ask again another day. Nobody is counting, and nothing anywhere records that you asked before.
- Look at somebody's photographs for ten minutes, which is a perfectly good use of a bad evening.
- Give one yourself, if you have it in you. It works even when you are the one who asked.
And if waiting is not what today can hold
Then this is the wrong place to be waiting, and saying so is the only useful thing we can do. freehug.me is not a helpline, nobody here is a professional anything, and we cannot promise you a person within minutes. There are people who can help properly, they are free, they are awake, and they will not be shocked by anything you say.
If you have not asked yet at all, and the thing stopping you is that nothing is really wrong, that is its own post.
More
- When you are the one with something to giveGiving a hug asks nothing of you beyond a kind minute. How giving works here, why you will not find out whether it helped, and when not to send one.
- Nobody here ever asks you for moneyThe one absolute rule on freehug.me, why it is stated so flatly, what a request for money tends to look like, and how to tell us without signing in.
- Blocking somebody, and what they seeOne tap, no reason asked, and the other person is never told. What blocking does on freehug.me, what it ends, and why it is deliberately a quiet exit.
Not a helpline, and nobody here is a professional anything. If today is a serious one, there are people who can help properly.
